What schema markup actually helps AI understand my business?

Google says AI Overviews need no special schema. Microsoft's Bing has said schema helps its models. Here is the short list worth adding for a small business, and the claims to ignore.

Short answer. Google says no special schema is needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Microsoft's Bing has said schema helps its language models understand content. For a small business, add accurate Organization or LocalBusiness markup that matches what the page shows. Treat it as a clear label, not a ranking lever.

Search Engine Land noted it is unclear whether Gemini, OpenAI or Perplexity use schema. That matches what we found. So the honest summary is: schema is documented as useful for how Google and Bing understand a page, it is not documented as a requirement for any AI, and for ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity nobody has said.

Why add it anyway

Google describes structured data as "a standardized format for providing information about a page and classifying the page content" (Google). It costs an hour, it feeds two search indexes that sit behind Gemini and Copilot, and it states your name, address and web address without guesswork. It is a live-search measure: it is read when a crawler fetches the page, so it works on the route you can change this month, not on model memory.

The short list for a small business

  1. Organization. Google says it can "help Google better understand your organization's administrative details". No property is required, but Google highlights name, alternateName, address, telephone, url and logo (Google). Add sameAs, which Google defines as the URL of a page on another website with more information about your organization, such as social or review profiles.
  1. LocalBusiness, if you serve customers at a place or area. Google requires name and address, and supports details such as business hours, departments and reviews (Google).
  1. Article, on guides and posts, with headline, dates and author. Google's search gallery lists Article, Product, Review snippet and Breadcrumb among supported types (Google).
  1. Product or Review snippet, only where the page really shows a product or genuine reviews.

Skip the long tail of types until these are right.

A minimal example

This is a template with made-up values. Replace every value with your real, visible details.

<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "LocalBusiness",
  "name": "Example Dental Practice",
  "url": "https://www.example.com/",
  "telephone": "+27 11 000 0000",
  "address": {
    "@type": "PostalAddress",
    "streetAddress": "1 Example Road",
    "addressLocality": "Sandton",
    "postalCode": "2196",
    "addressCountry": "ZA"
  },
  "sameAs": [
    "https://www.linkedin.com/company/example",
    "https://www.facebook.com/example"
  ]
}
</script>

Google recommends JSON-LD "if your site's setup allows it" and accepts microdata and RDFa if valid (Google).

Rules that keep it safe

  • Match the visible page. Google says: "don't add structured data about information that is not visible to the user, even if the information is accurate" (Google).
  • Use the same details everywhere. The name, address and phone in markup should match your site text and listings. See entity basics for AI.
  • Put it in the HTML. Markup that only appears after a script runs may be missed by a crawler. Check the page source.
  • Do not expect a lift. Some SEO blogs quote percentage gains for schema. We found no first-party source for any and do not repeat them.

Where schema fits in the bigger plan

Schema comes after the basics: being indexed, letting crawlers in, and clear pages. The order is in how to get recommended by AI and the indexing step in how to get indexed in Bing.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT use schema markup? We found no OpenAI statement saying it does. OpenAI documents that OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT search (OpenAI), but not how it reads structured data.

Is schema markup required for Google AI Overviews? No. Google says no special schema is needed; a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet (Google).

Which format should I use? JSON-LD. Google recommends it when your setup allows, and also accepts microdata and RDFa.

Can wrong schema hurt me? Google warns that markup can be ineligible for rich results if it breaks its guidelines. Keep it matching the visible page.

How do I test my markup? Use a validator such as Google's Rich Results Test, and read the page source to confirm the markup is in the HTML.
