Short answer. Reddit is among the most-cited sources in AI answers, and review sites such as Yelp are cited too, according to citation studies from Peec and Semrush. That shows AIs read them. It does not show that reviews or posts cause a recommendation, and the share changes month to month.
What the studies show
These are counts of which websites AI answers link to. They are not tests of what causes a business to be recommended.
| Study | Finding | Sample |
|---|---|---|
| Peec AI, March 2026 | Reddit ranked first or second on ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews. Yelp ranked seventh and Wikipedia fourth overall | 30 million cited sources, US (Peec AI) |
| Semrush, January to February 2026 | Reddit was the top-cited domain across ChatGPT Search, Google AI Mode and Perplexity | 325,000 prompts across 12 industries, as summarised by eMarketer (eMarketer). We could only read the summary, not the study |
Peec adds that the generic ranking is a starting point and that industries differ. In hotels, for example, Booking.com and Airbnb often rank above Reddit (Peec AI).
Why Reddit shows up
There are two documented links between Reddit and the AI companies.
- OpenAI announced a partnership with Reddit on 16 May 2024. OpenAI gets access to Reddit's Data API, described as real-time, structured content, and the stated aim is to help its tools surface Reddit content (AP, via WSLS). OpenAI's own post returned an error for us, so we rely on the AP report.
- In February 2024 Google gained access to Reddit's Data API to get "efficient and structured access to fresher information" for its AI models, and Reddit content can be shown across Google products (Engadget). Neither company published the terms.
Beyond that, Peec's own reading is that engines treat authentic user discussion as more trustworthy than marketing content (Peec AI). That is Peec's interpretation, not a statement from any AI company.
It moves a lot
Do not build a plan around one site. Semrush reported that ChatGPT cited Reddit in close to 60 percent of responses in early August 2025 and about 10 percent by mid-September, a drop it attributed to Google removing a search parameter, not to OpenAI (Semrush). Peec warns that businesses with only a Reddit presence face concentration risk (Peec AI).
What about reviews?
We found no first-party document from OpenAI, Google, Anthropic or Perplexity saying how much customer reviews weigh in a recommendation. What exists is citation counting, such as Yelp's seventh place in the Peec study, and Google's own LocalBusiness markup, which can describe reviews to Google (Google). So the supportable claim is narrow: review pages are among the pages AIs read and link to, so an accurate, active review profile gives them something true to read. We do not claim that more reviews raise your chance of a recommendation.
What to do
- Ask real customers for reviews on the platforms your customers use, in the way each platform allows. Reply to reviews, including bad ones, factually.
- Find out which sites AIs cite for your questions. Run your questions with search on and open the sources the AI lists. That tells you whether Reddit, Yelp, a trade directory or an industry site matters in your sector. The check guide shows how.
- Take part on Reddit like a person, not a brand. Answer questions you are qualified to answer, state your connection to the business, and follow each subreddit's rules, which moderators set and enforce. We did not find an official numeric self-promotion limit on Reddit's own pages, so ignore claims of a fixed "10 percent rule" as folklore.
- Keep your own site the clear source of truth. Reviews and threads point back to facts, so those facts should be easy to find and identical everywhere. See entity basics for AI.
- Never fake it. The US Federal Trade Commission announced a final rule on 14 August 2024 banning fake and AI-generated reviews, paying for reviews of a set sentiment, undisclosed insider reviews and review suppression by threats, and it allows civil penalties for knowing violations (FTC). Outside the US, check your local rules.
Where this fits
Reviews and forum mentions are step seven of the plan in how to get recommended by AI. They come after you are indexed and your crawlers are allowed. A business that is not in the index will not be helped by a pile of reviews.
Frequently asked questions
Does ChatGPT use Reddit? OpenAI announced a partnership with Reddit on 16 May 2024 that gives it access to Reddit's Data API (AP, via WSLS), and Peec found Reddit first or second on every engine it tested. How much weight it gets is not published.
Should I post about my business on Reddit? Only as a genuine community member would: answer questions, say who you are, and follow each subreddit's rules.
Are fake reviews worth the risk? No. See the FTC rule above.
Do I need reviews on a particular site? It depends on your industry. Check which sites AIs cite for your own questions.
Will Reddit's influence last? Not necessarily. See the swings in the Semrush data above.

Checked on 27 October 2026. Peec's study was published in March 2026. The Semrush Reddit-decline page and the eMarketer chart were read through summaries; OpenAI's Reddit announcement returned an error. Citation studies measure what AIs link to and cannot show cause.
